Pilot Permeable Landscape Project
In December 2004, according to a design by Shift Design Studio, the San Francisco Department of Public Works (DPW) in collaboration with the Shotwell Street Neighborhood Association removed concrete and installed plants on Shotwell between 17th and 18th Streets in the Mission District. In an effort to reduce loads on a failing sewer system while creating a pedestrian-friendly environment, this project serves as a model for people from other neighborhoods to consider.
The completed project was featured at World Environment Day (June 1-5, 2005).
This type of sidewalk landscaping is now available to all properties in San Francisco through the Sidewalk Landscaping Permit administered by DPW. See www.PlantSF.org.
